Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved people were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The key insight is not just “history happened,” but that freedom required communication, enforcement, and follow-through. That theme is why Juneteenth resonates strongly in communities like South Central Los Angeles, where families carry intergenerational experiences of exclusion, segregation, displacement, and resilience.
