California Today: Los Angeles Weather Forecast in a Glance

  • 2 min read

Los Angeles is in for a hot, mostly sunny afternoon today, with inland neighborhoods running much warmer than the coast. Coastal communities should stay cooler, with a moderate afternoon sea breeze and temperatures mainly in the 70s.

Afternoon Los Angeles Forecast — Thursday, August 20

Downtown and inland Los Angeles will reach close to 90°F, with sunny to partly cloudy skies and light winds turning southwest during the afternoon. The National Weather Service is highlighting a moderate risk of heat-related illness, especially during the afternoon and evening.

Along Los Angeles County beaches—from Malibu through Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach, and Long Beach—-give way to afternoon sunshine, with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s. A west-to-southwest sea breeze will strengthen later in the day.

Near LAX and the immediate coast, temperatures should stay near 77–81°F, with mostly sunny conditions and afternoon winds generally around 5–10 mph.

Los Angeles gets the classic late-summer split personality today: warm and sunny inland, cooler and breezier along the coast. If you’re heading out for a walk, workout, or beach stroll, time it wisely, bring water, and let the afternoon marine layer do some of the cooling work.

Los Angeles Afternoon Weather: Warm Inland, Breezy at the Beach

Across the city and inland neighborhoods, afternoon temperatures will climb toward the upper 80s and around 90°F under mostly sunny skies. Coastal communities in Los Angeles County—including Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach, and Long Beach—should remain cooler, generally in the mid-to-upper 70s, with clouds clearing and a west-to-southwest sea breeze building later in the day.

That coastal breeze may feel like nature’s air-conditioning, but it does not cancel out the heat. Sun exposure, physical activity, and dry conditions can still leave you depleted—especially if you wait until you feel thirsty to drink.
